Bruce Smith worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 30 years after receiving B.S. and M.S. degrees in wildlife biology from the University of Montana in the 1970s. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Marines receiving a Purple Heart during the Vietnam War. As a wildlife manager, he helped direct the recovery of wildlife populations on the Wind River Indian Reservation and served at the National Elk Refuge for 22 years. His graduate studies and professional research and publications focused on population ecology of various large mammal species. Since retiring from federal service, he has continued to work and write to promote conservation of wildlife and wildlands. He’s an award winning author of natural history and science books and lectures on conservation topics across the western U.S.
