NOTE: Functional knowledge and use of this application is the responsibility of the user.
All users who need to connect to FRONTIER are encouraged to install and use SSH (secure shell) and SFTP (secure file transfer protocol) clients. SSH and SFTP use an encrypted tunnel for authentication, session connections, and data transfer.
With SSH or SFTP, in order to take advantage of security protections and to enable the client application to safely store the host's pubic key for subsequent use, manual verification of the key fingerprint is necessary on first use of the application to connect to FRONTIER. Once you've accepted the key, you will not be prompted again unless the key changes. Key changes made by University of Wyoming FRONTIER administrators will be posted in this document for reference. When connecting to FRONTIER, if you are presented with a key fingerprint that is not posted in this document, do not complete the connection to FRONTIER, and contact your IT user consultant or the IT Help Desk at 766-HELP, option 1, immediately.
New FRONTIER Key Fingerprints:
This document provides instructions for installing and using an SSH and SFTP client from SSH Communications Security. These are free, non-commercial Windows clients for "University Users." As specified by the license agreement governing the use of these applications, 'The term "University Users" is limited to students, faculty members, researchers, administrators, support staff, and employees of a university when acting in this capacity.' The full license agreement can be found after installation in C:/Program Files (x86) /SSH Communications/Security/SSH Secure Shell/license-non-commercial.txt.
Newer alternatives based on openssh for both University and non-university use on Windows systems are available and recommended. See the Alternatives section of http://openssh.org.
NOTE: These instructions are specific to Windows operating systems. This application may not function correctly on post Windows XP systems.
For information on SSH and SFTP for current Windows or other operating systems, see the Other Operating Systems section of this document.
