DNS (domain name service) Web name hosting allows you to request a Web site on the UW central Web servers that does not follow the UW standard Web site naming convention (www.uwyo.edu/sitename). Through the DNS Web name hosting service, the UW Web servers are setup to allow requests to come in for a third level domain name or a domain name outside of the UWYO domain name scheme entirely and route them to the correct location for processing within the UWYO network.
It may help to define a couple phrases in order to clarify the explanation.
Third level domain: using sitename.uwyo.edu as an example, the ".edu" portion of the name is considered the first level domain name, the ".uwyo" portion of the name is considered the second level domain name, and the "sitename" portion of the name is the third level domain name.
Domain name outside of the UWYO domain name scheme: using www.sitename.net as an example, because it does not include either the UWYO first or second level domain names (i.e. does not include "uwyo.edu"), it is entirely outside of the UWYO domain name scheme.
Note: As of February 11, 2009 all new DNS hosted sites will be created as basic UW web sites. The FrontPage Extended site option will no longer be available for DNS hosted sites and will no longer be an option for DNS hosted sites requested through the Central Site Requests pages.
What are the fees involved with setting up a DNS Web hosted site at UW?
A third level domain name or outside domain name used in conjunction with a Web site located on the UW central Web servers is $100 per year. These sites provide the same features and restrictions as regular UW Web sites. See the UW Web Site FAQ (www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=600&parentid=1) for further information about these features and restrictions.
NOTE: Site names that follow the existing UW Web site naming convention, www.uwyo.edu/sitename, are free!
How do I get a third level domain name setup?
To get a third level domain name setup (i.e. a Web site name in the format sitename.uwyo.edu), complete a UW Web site request form through the Central Web Site Management Requests site (www.uwyo.edu/centralsiterequests), and specify that the request is for a DNS hosted Web site in the Additional Comments section before submitting the request. To save time, you can also include the billing information in this section, which needs to include the following:

How do I get a Web site name that is outside of the UWYO domain name scheme?
To get a domain name that is outside of the UWYO domain name scheme (i.e. a Web site name that does not include ".uwyo.edu"),
Why would I want or need to take advantage of the UW DNS Web name hosting service?
