Access FRONTIER and Change Your FRONTIER Password

Introduction

Changing a password on FRONTIER is accomplished using the passwd command. Note that this command must be entered in lower case. The information you enter for old password, new password, and verification will not be visible on the screen. Re-entering the new password for verification guards against typing errors. If either the old password, new password, or the verification are mistyped, the old password remains unchanged.

Guidelines for Creating a Password

The following guidelines must be observed when creating a password on a UNIX system.

  • Passwords are case-sensitive. You must remember exactly which letters you entered in upper case and which letters in lower case.
     
  • Passwords must be at least six characters long. If you have a longer password, only the first eight characters will be recognized.
     
  • Passwords must contain at least two alphabetic characters and at least one numeric or special character and may contain spaces. Special characters can include
    < > ’ ” * { } ^ ! \ [ ] # | & ( ) $ ?  ~

     
  • When you change your password, at least three characters in the new password must be different from the old password.
     
  • When typing your password, the keystrokes will not show on the screen.

Procedure

NOTE: These instructions are specific to a Microsoft Windows operating system, running the SSH client. If you are using an operating system other than Windows to complete this procedure, you will need to access the FRONTIER server through a Secure Telnet application specific to your operating system.  Information on installing and using SSH for Windows and other operating systems is located at  http://www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=265&parentid=1.

  1. Connecting to Your Account on the FRONTIER Server

    1. Make sure you have an active connection to the Internet. Click the Start menu button, point to All Programs (or Programs), point to SSH Secure Shell, and click Secure Shell Client (Telnet replacement).
       
    2. To connect to FRONTIER, click Quick Connect in the toolbar.
       
    3. In the Connect to Remote Host window, in the Host Name box, type frontier.uwyo.edu. In the User Name box, enter your username, and click Connect.
       
    4. In the Host Identification window, verify that the key fingerprint matches the one listed in the FRONTIER Key Fingerprints section of the SSH How To document's Introduction (http://www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=265&parentid=1), and click Yes.
       
      IMPORTANT: If you are presented with a key fingerprint that is not posted in the SSH How To document, do not complete the connection to FRONTIER, and contact your IT user consultant or the IT Help Desk at 766-HELP, option 1, immediately.
       
    5. In the Enter Password box, enter your password to complete the login process.
       
  2. Changing Your FRONTIER Password
     
    1. At the frontier prompt, type passwd, and then press ENTER.
       
    2. At the Enter existing login password prompt, type your current FRONTIER password, and press ENTER.
       
    3. At the New Password prompt, type your new FRONTIER password, and press ENTER.
       
    4. At the Re-enter new Password prompt, type your new FRONTIER password again, and press ENTER.
