Install Microsoft Lync for Windows from the UW Network

Introduction

Through the Microsoft Campus Agreement, the University of Wyoming (UW) provides the latest versions of Microsoft Office (for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems) for UW-owned computers. Supported versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system are also provided through this agreement. These specific Microsoft software installations are provided free of charge to departments.

Cooperating agencies may be eligible to purchase software through the UW Microsoft Academic Select License Program. Further information on this program can be found on the UW Select Program Web page (www.uwyo.edu/infotech/services/software/select/), or call 766-3686.

For ease of installation of this software, Information Technology (IT) provides network installation points. These network locations are restricted to UWYO domain accounts, and the Microsoft licenses restrict the installation of these products to UW-owned computers only.

Procedure

NOTE: It is recommended that you uninstall Microsoft Office Communicator and the "Microsoft Conferencing Add-In for Microsoft Office Outlook" application if it is installed.

1. Determine Operating System Version
   In order to install the proper version of Microsoft Lync, follow the instructions at How to Determine a Windows Computer's Service Pack Level (http://www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=242) to see if your computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit operating system. This information will be required during the installation process.
    
2. Accessing the Network Installation Point for Microsoft Lync
   
   
   1. Click the Start menu button, and click in the Search program and files box (or click Run in Windows XP).
       
   2. Click in the Search program and files box (or the Run window).
      
      
      • If you are running a 32-bit operating system (determined in step 1), type in \\uwapps.uwyo.edu\lync$\32bit\LyncSetup.exe and press Enter.
      • If you are running a 64-bit operating system, type in \\uwapps.uwyo.edu\lync$\64bit\LyncSetup.exe and press Enter.
        NOTE: Make sure you have typed the correct slashes (i.e. \ and not /).

   3. If prompted for your username and password, enter your username as uwyo\username, where username is your domain username, and the password is your domain password.

   4. If you see a User Account Control window, click Yes.

   5. In the Install Microsoft Lync 2010 window, click Install.

   6. Microsoft Lync will now install. When complete, the window will state Install succeeded. Click Close.

3. Opening Microsoft Lync
   
   
   1. To open Microsoft Lync, click the Start menu button, point to All Programs (or Programs), click Microsoft Lync, and click Microsoft Lync 2010.
       
   2. If your computer logs onto the domain, Microsoft Lync will automatically log you in with your logon credentials.
       
   3. If your computer is not part of the domain, Microsoft Lync will prompt you for logon information.
      
      
      1. On the screen prompting for a sign-in address, enter your UW email address and click Sign In.

      2. The next screen will prompt for a password. Enter your UW domain password and click Sign In.

      3. On the Cannot sign in to Lync screen, click Close.

      4. The screen asking for your credentials will come back. Change the Username to the format uwyo\username and click Sign In.

   4. A Microsoft Lync 2010 window will come up. If you want more information about the functionality that comes with Lync, click start here. If you do not want to view this information, click the X in the upper right corner to close the window.
