Frontier Server Accounts Frequently Asked Questions

Frontier has historically auto-created accounts as part of the UW account creation process every eligible person goes through (faculty, staff, students, special cases, etc). This policy ended on April 2, 2012. Frontier accounts are now created only if requested.

What is Frontier?

Frontier is the general Unix system available to anyone on campus.

Why would I want a Frontier account?

Frontier has been used for a number of purposes. The main tasks it is used for today are as follows:

  • Statistical packages SAS and R. Performance on Frontier is much better than what can be achieved on a desktop
  • SFTP - For securely transferring files

Why are Frontier accounts no longer auto-created for new students and employees?

Usage on Frontier has declined over its lifetime and the vast majority of auto-created accounts have never been activated or have been inactive for years.

What if I need a Frontier account?

Frontier accounts are still available to any eligible person that wishes to have one. Accounts can be requested through the IT Help Desk (766-HELP), option 1, or by using the Frontier Account Request Form.

Will current accounts be deleted?

Only inactive accounts will be removed. Accounts that have never been used or have not been used in the last two years are considered inactive. Active accounts will remain enabled. Periodic cleanup will occur to remove accounts that have become inactive.

Okay, I have an account, now what?

Frontier is accessible over SSH or SFTP. You will need a client that is capable of this protocol, such as puTTY (www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/) for SSH or WinSCP (http://winscp.net) for SFTP.

I want to use SAS or R over X11 (graphically), can I do that?

Yes, X11 can can be tunneled over SSH. If you are running Windows, you can use packages that allow this, such as eXceed or Cygwin. Mac/Unix/Linux systems can do this natively.
