UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System Frequently Asked Questions

The UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System is a collection of lab computers that are designed to be accessed from a remote network connection. The remote lab computers have an identical configuration to the UWSTUDENT lab computers found on campus. Access to student H: drive storage, roaming profiles, and specialized software are all available through the remote lab computers.

Who can access the UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System?

The remote lab is currently available to students, faculty, and staff with UWYO domain accounts. Faculty and staff use of the remote lab system should be limited to activities that are related to class preparation and course development. Use of the software packages on the remote lab system for faculty and staff research related purposes is prohibited.

How do I connect to the UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System?

The UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System can be accessed at http://microlab.uwyo.edu/uwsremote.  Directions for connecting can be found at How to Connect to the UWStudent Remote Lab System. (www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=2263&parentid=1)

What do I need to connect to the UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System?

To access the UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System you must have a high speed Internet connection and a computer with Java enabled Internet browser.  Connections to the UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System can be made through dial-up, but because of speed limitations, dial-up access is not recommended or supported.  For the best possible experience Information Technology recommends and provides support for the Internet Explorer browser.

What browsers are supported by the UWSTUDENT Lab system?

The software running the Remote Student Lab system is designed to work with any Java capable Web browser. For the best possible experience Information Technology recommends and provides support for Internet Explorer.  Other Java capable browsers, such as Firefox and Safari, have been tested and run the remote lab, but any problems incurred with these browsers can only be supported as a best effort.

After I log into the web page for the remote lab, the next screen that comes up is unreadable. What can be done to make the screen readable?

If the screen after logging in is unusable it is an indication that cookies are being blocked.  Go into Tools, Internet Options, Privacy (Tools, Options, Privacy in Firefox) and enable cookies.  Once cookies are enabled you will need to close out of the browser and re-launch it for the changes to take effect.

Can I print from the UWSTUDENT Remote Lab System?

Yes, printing is available on the Remote Lab System if you have a printer installed locally on your computer.  The Remote Lab System uses a universal print driver to connect to the printer you have installed locally on your computer.  Because the driver is not an exact match for your printer, there may be differences between what is displayed on the screen and what is printed.

If you are having problems printing to the lab computers from your Mac, instructions and mapping commands can be found at http://microlab.uwyo.edu/labs/macprinters.asp.

When I save files, where are they saved to?

The My Documents folder on the UWSTUDENT Remote Lab computers is redirected to the Personal folder on students’ H: drive (h:\personal). The H: drive is the network storage space provided to all enrolled students. For faculty and staff, the H: drive is mapped to their WAREHOUSE personal network storage.
