Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the UW Network

Introduction

Information Technology (IT) has tested and recommends the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 provides multiple security enhancements to the Windows XP operating system, including the new Windows Firewall, which has replaced the Internet Connection Firewall, and other components.

The installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 will not be pushed automatically to UWYO campus computers via Software Update Services (SUS) due to the size of the update and the possibility of problems with the update through SUS. Users can install Service Pack 2 from the Windows Update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) or, if on campus, from the UW network. This document provides the steps to access and install Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the UW network.

Prior to installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, it is strongly recommended that you back up your computer. Service Pack 2 is an operating system update and though not often, can cause your computer to malfunction and cause loss of data. Additionally, there are known issues with Windows XP Service Pack 2 and specific applications. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/xpsp2swhw for further information on Windows XP Service Pack 2, its components, and the applications that may not function properly after installation.

If you are uncomfortable installing Service Pack 2 on your UW-owned computer or have questions about backing up your data, contact your IT user consultant (http://www.uwyo.edu/InfoTech/services/helpdesk/uc/) for assistance.

Procedure

NOTE: This installation can take up to three hours to complete depending on the speed of your Internet connection and your computer, though it is not necessary for you to interact with it after the first few steps and the final restart.

Tips

  1. For  information and IT recommendations on the Windows Firewall that is installed with Windows XP Service Pack 2, see How to Enable/Disable the Windows Firewall in Windows XP (www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=245&parentid=1)

  2. Additional Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office patches can be installed from the UW network at \\uwapps\patches. However, for multiple patch installation, it is recommended that you use the Microsoft update Web sites to assist you in updating your computer:  Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and Office Update (http://officeupdate.microsoft.com).
