Use SAS on FRONTIER

NOTE: Functional knowledge and use of this application is the responsibility of the user.

Introduction

FRONTIER supports the Statistical Analysis System (SAS), a comprehensive statistical/graphical system from the SAS Institute. At this writing, SAS version 6.12 (level TS060) is installed. UW purchased the "Academic Computing Offer" which includes most SAS modules.

In addition, a Windows version of SAS is available in the Student Computer Labs and may be requested for installation in the University offices.

Documentation

SAS can be started at the shell prompt with the command sas. By default, the Display Manager System is disabled. This means SAS runs in conventional line mode on your terminal (or terminal emulator).

By adding the –dms option to the command line, SAS will operate via OSF/Motif windows which requires an X-window display system (server). If you wish to run the DMS on a character-cell terminal, you can specify -fsdevice ascii -dms. Refer to the manual SAS Companion for UNIX Environments: User Interfaces for more details.

SAS/GIS is also available. SAS supplies a large number of TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) files. If you use SAS/GIS and need to access these files, it is important to know that they are installed in /usr/local/TGRMAPS.

Note: Due to the way SAS released SAS/GIS, the proper online help is only available from within  SAS/GIS. If you access SAS/GIS help via any other SAS component, you will not access the Help files that relate to this release.
