UW DSL Frequently Asked Questions

UW is no longer offering Qwest DSL service to new subscribers.

UW students, faculty, staff, and retirees can subscribe to Qwest’s DSL Service through the University of Wyoming. If your home phone line meets Qwest’s requirements, Qwest will provide the DSL connection while UW provides the connection to the UW network and the Internet.

For further information on DSL at UW, see the DSL home page (www.uwyo.edu/InfoTech/Services/Data/dsl.htm).

NOTE: The University of Wyoming is not a DSL provider, therefore,  DSL service is not available on the UW campus (i.e. offices, classrooms, residences, apartments, etc).

How do I sign up for DSL at the University of Wyoming?

First, Qwest must be your telephone service provider.

To sign up for UW DSL, bring your University Identification (Campus Express) card to the Information Technology (IT) Business Services office in Room 207 of the Ivinson building where you will be asked to sign the UW DSL contract. Once you have signed the contract and provided your information, arrival of your DSL equipment and the activation of your DSL connection will take approximately two weeks.

You should also verify your UWYO domain username and password in preparation for your DSL connection.

Why am I unable to connect?

Check the Qwest due date for connection which was provided by IT Business Services  when you signed your contract. It generally takes about two weeks to get everything hooked up and ready to go. It can take longer, but you should be notified of that at signup.

Why am I unable to train my line?

If you cannot “train” the line, Qwest has not gotten the line set up yet. If you can “train” your line, but still cannot connect, check your contract again to see what the due date for connection is supposed to be. We cannot do anything prior to the due date. Also, check your password to make certain it is correct (you must use your UWYO domain username and password).

"DSL Modem Training" is the process the modem uses to communicate with the central office equipment to test communication links. If the link is valid, the system is “trained”. This is software-driven from the client machine.

Why do I get a message that my modem is not connected or there is no dial tone?

Are you using the Qwest DSL icon or the UWYO-PPP icon? You must use the one created by the DSL setup software. You are no longer dialing into the UWYO-PPP.

I connected with Qwest as my ISP. Why am I now unable to connect to UWYO as my ISP?

The change-over takes five days. Did you get your contract signed? Have you changed your user name and password to your UWYO domain set?

I have changed my UWYO domain password. Do I have to make any changes to my DSL connection?

If you are using an external modem, the stored password must be changed to agree with your new UWYO password. If you do not change your stored password you will not be able to access the Internet. Furthermore, use of your old password will lock out your DSL account. Contact Qwest at 1-800-247-7285, option 2, option 3, option 1 for assistance with changing your stored password.

I have checked everything else listed. Why am I still unable to connect?

Try entering your UWYO domain username in the format UWYO\username.
