Adjust Your Ethernet Card to 10Mb Full Duplex (for ResNet Users in White, Hill and Crane Halls)

Introduction

These instructions will show you how to set up your computer to work with offset ports in White, Hill and Crane halls, especially if your computer is experiencing very slow response times when connected to the Internet.

If your Ethernet port looks like the diagram below, you may need to adjust your computer's Ethernet card network settings.

Ethernet port

Procedure

Windows 7, Vista and XP:

  1. In the Start menu right-click on Computer (My Computer in Windows XP). Click on Manage and then click on Continue in the User Access Control window (Vista, Windows 7).

  2. In the Computer Management window click on Device Manager. Click on the plus sign (+) beside Network adapters to expand the selection and then right-click on your Ethernet card (usually it is the Gigabit Network Connection). Select Properties in the drop-down menu.

  3. In the Network Connection Properties window select the Advanced tab. In the Property box, select Link Speed & Duplex. In the Value drop-down list select 10 Mbps Full Duplex. Click OK. This completes the procedure for Windows.

Macintosh OS X 10.5 – 10.6.X:

  1. Go to Apple, System Preferences.

  2. In the System Preferences window double-click on the Network icon

  3. In the Network window select Ethernet, then click on Advanced.

  4. In the Ethernet window:
    1. select Ethernet at the top,
    2. select Manually in the Configure drop-down box,
    3. select 10baseT/UTP in the Speed drop-down box,
    4. select full-duplex, flow-control in the Duplex drop-down box
    5. click OK.
    This ends the procedure for Mac.
