Install SAS 9.3 from the UW Network

Introduction

NOTE: Functional knowledge and use of this application is the responsibility of the user.

NOTE: Approximately 7.5 gigabytes of hard drive space is needed.

NOTE: This document applies to both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The 64 bit version should only be used on 64 bit Windows systems.
How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system (information from Microsoft covering Windows Vista/7 and XP).
How can I determine if my computer/operating system is 64-bit? (information from a third party software site covering Windows Vista/7 and XP, Mac OS).

NOTE for XP users: Depending on your firewall settings, the install may trigger a block/unblock notice; choose unblock so that the install can proceed.

NOTE for Vista Windows 7 users: SAS is not supported for any of the home editions of Vista or Windows 7. See http://support.sas.com/resources/sysreq/hosts/pc/ for details on supported operating systems.

Note: Uninstall any previous version of SAS. Instructions for uninstalling previous versions of SAS 9.2 are at How to Uninstall SAS 9.2 Phase 2 Maintenance Releases 0 and 3.

Procedure

1. Click on Start, then Run, and enter
   
   \\uwapps.uwyo.edu\SAS9.3$\setup.exe for both 32 and 64 bit Windows systems and click OK.
    
2. Installing SAS 9.3
   
   
   1. In the Choose Setup Language window, verify that English is selected, and click OK.
       
   2. In the Select Deployment Task window, verify that Install SAS Software is selected and click Next.

   3. In the Select SAS Software Order screen select, select the version appropriate for your system:
      Windows Workstation x86 for 32 bit Windows systems or
      Windows Workstation x64 for 64 bit Windows systems.

   4. Click on Next in the Specify SAS Home window.

   5. Make sure Install SAS Foundation and Related Software is checked in the Select Deployment Type screen.

   6. Scroll down on the Select Products to Install window and select SAS OnlineDoc for Windows (this is to address a known issue where SAS Help may not be accessible from within the program). Click on Next.

   7. Click on Next in the Select SAS Foundation Products window.

   8. Click on Next in the Specify SAS Installation Data File window (the proper data file will have been predetermined in step 2C).

   9. Select Clear All in the Select Language Support window (which leaves English selected). Click on Next.

   10. Click on Next in the Select Regional Settings window.

   11. The first part of installing files is selecting the Java Runtime Environment. Make sure Use the recommended Java Runtime Environment is checked and click on Next.

   12. Click on Next after the Checking System process finishes.

   13. The actual installation begins at this point, beginning with Stage 1, System Requirements. These may vary from system to system. Click on Start. SAS installs at Stage 2. Installation may take 30 minutes or more depending on the speed of one’s network connection. Click on Next when done.

   14. Click Finish in the Additional Resources window.

3. Running SAS 9.3
   
   
   1. To run SAS, click on Start, click on Programs, then SAS, then SAS 9.3 (English). To run SAS Help, click on Start, click on Programs, then SAS, then Documentation, then SAS OnlineDoc 9.3.
       
   2. To create desktop shortcuts for these applications, follow the above paths, right click on them, select Send to from the menu and then Desktop (create shortcut).
