Manually Install Microsoft Endpoint Protection

Introduction

The University of Wyoming uses Microsoft Endpoint Protection for its antivirus protection. In order for individual University-owned computers to be protected with up-to-date antivirus protection, Microsoft Endpoint Protection will need to be installed. This installation will be automatic for computers that receive updates from UW. For computers that do not receive updates from UW, this utility needs to be run in order to install Endpoint. This process can also be followed to reinstall Microsoft Endpoint.

Also, during the process, the installer will remove the following antivirus programs if they are present:

  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise version 8
  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise version 8.5 and version 8.7
  • Microsoft Forefront Codename Stirling Beta 2
  • Microsoft Forefront Codename Stirling Beta 3
  • Microsoft Forefront Client Security v1
  • Microsoft Security Essentials v1
  • Microsoft Security Essentials 2010
  • Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010
  • Microsoft Security Center Online v1
  • Symantec Corporate Edition version 10
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection version 11
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition version 12
  • Trend Micro OfficeScan

If the computer receives its Microsoft updates from UW, then Endpoint will also receive updates from UW, and must be connected to the UW network in order to receive the updates. For this reason, if the computer will frequently be off the UW network, the computer should be configured to obtain updates from Microsoft. If the computer receives its Microsoft updates directly from Microsoft, then Endpoint will connect directly to Microsoft in order to get updates. To configure a computer connected to the UWYO domain to receive updates from Microsoft, you will need to contact the UW IT Help Desk (307-766-4357 option 1) to opt-out, and then reboot your computer while connected to the UWYO domain in order to get the new policies. After that is complete, verify your Automatic Updates are configured properly by going to How to Configure and Run Windows Automatic Updates (www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=181). Then reinstall Microsoft Endpoint by following the instructions below.

Note: Microsoft Endpoint is only to be used on University-owned computers. For personal computers, you may choose to install one of the free antivirus applications such as Microsoft's Security Essentials or AVG, or any other antivirus software that you prefer (free or otherwise).

Procedure

  1. If the university-owned computer you are installing this program on is located off campus, connect to WyoSecure (https://wyosecure.uwyo.edu/). Information about WyoSecure can be found at WyoSecure VPN Frequently Asked Questions (www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?askitdocid=3301).
     
  2. Click the Start menu button, and click in the Search program and files box, and type \\uwapps.uwyo.edu\antivirus\endpoint and press Enter.
    Note: Make sure that you have typed the correct slashes (i.e. \ and not /).

  3. If prompted for your username and password, enter your username as uwyo\username, where username is your UWyo domain username, and the password is your domain password.

  4. Double-click the install file.
     
  5. The installation will now occur. Once it is complete, you will see a new Microsoft Endpoint Protection icon ( ) located by your clock in the notification area.
     

If the Endpoint icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the desktop, by the clock) is green , your computer is protected and no issues have been found.

If the icon is orange , then Endpoint needs some attention. Click the Endpoint icon, and select Open. Endpoint will open, and it will display a message regarding what it needs. If you don't know how to resolve the issue, contact the UWIT Help Desk at http://support.uwyo.edu or 766-HELP (4357), option 1, or userhelp@uwyo.edu.

If the icon is not there, then Endpoint is not running. This could be a symptom of other issues, so contact the UWIT Help Desk.
