Program of Study


For the PhD, the core course requirement is the same as that for the M.S. degree which is shown below. In addition to the 29 hours of core courses, an additional 13 hours of graduate level electives for a total of 42 hours of formal coursework must be completed. The remaining 30 hours necessary to meet the requirement of 72 hours for the PhD degree may include additional formal course credits or 5980 Dissertation Research.

Candidates for the PhD degree also are required to demonstrate satisfactory progress and proficiency in the general areas of atmospheric science to their Graduate Committee during a rigorous qualifying assessment (the Qualifying Exam) to be conducted no later than the end of the third semester of their program.

For the MS, a minimum of four (4) hours of ATSC5960 Thesis Research is required to be part of the Program of Study in addition to the formal coursework to complete the Degree.
