Libcloudph++ - A new library of Eulerian and Lagrangian warm-rain cloud microphysics schemes

Abstract

Different cloud modeling systems (i.e. the software) share not only the concepts but also the implementations of some of their components. This creates a perfect opportunity for code reuse which is one of the key best practices for scientific computing. The reality, however, is that the code to be shared is often “transplanted” from one model to another rather than reused in a way enabling the users to benefit from ongoing development and updates of the shared code.

In this talk, I will introduce libcloudph++, a C++ library of algorithms for representing cloud microphysics in numerical models. The motivation for the development of libcloudph++ is twofold. First, we intend to exemplify the possibilities of library-based code reuse in the context of cloud microphysics modeling. Second, in the long run, we intend to offer the community a range of open-source tools for research on such topics as the interactions between aerosol, clouds and precipitation.

 As of the current release, libcloudph++ covers three warm-rain schemes: the single- and double-moment bulk schemes, and the particle-based scheme with Monte-Carlo coalescence. The three schemes are intended for modeling frameworks of different dimensionality and complexity. During the talk, I will present example simulations performed using libcloudph++ coupled with modeling frameworks ranging from a parcel model, through a 2D prescribed-flow framework, to a 3D large-eddy simulation.
