Sustainable business practices are innovative approaches that seek to improve balanced economic, environmental, and social outcomes for the firm and its stakeholders in both the long and short term. Sustainable business is an emerging area of research, education, and practice. The UW College of Business is pleased to take a leading role in both research and education on the topic of sustainable business practices.

Economics and Sustainability

Sustainability matters with a modern market economy. Understanding how to promote sustainable economy today without sacrificing opportunities for future generations is a crucial question confronting us all in the 21st century. The Economics and Finance Department at UW has long been at the forefront in addressing this sustainability question. Over the decades, E&F faculty have examined how societies can use natural resources more efficiently and equitably to promote both economic development and environmental protection. We explore sustainability challenges that matter locally and resonate around the globe, including environmental regulation, incentive design, ecosystem valuation, climate change, biodiversity, green power, green growth, integrated natural and human systems, natural resource use, energy production and policy, sustainable organizations of markets and industry, international trade, finance and economic development. The department has produced a world-class program by pulling together scientists with a common purpose-how to use economics and finance to create more well-being while protecting our environment and natural resources.
