Student FAQs

JCC General Questions

  • What is EPIC?

EPIC, otherwise known as Classroom to Corporate, is a career-preparation platform that allows students to take charge of their own career readiness. There are several different milestones dealing with many different career topics. While some are assigned in classes, many are not—but you can still complete them! Classroom to Corporate can be a valuable tool in your career readiness education.

  1. Why don’t my milestone have a green check mark, even after I have completed everything?

It is likely that your milestone requires approval from a career services staff member. This is a control measure to ensure students are completing milestones, rather than uploading insufficient work. Because of the high volume of students who complete work that requires career services approval, please allow 1 to 2 weeks for approval. Once approved, the yellow triangle will turn into a green check mark. If your deadline is in less than five business days and you still do not have a green check mark, please send an email to jcc@uwyo.edu or visit the office in BU 187.

  1. Who should I contact if I have questions about Classroom to Corporate milestones?

Please email the JCC at jcc@uwyo.edu if you have any questions. Do not contact your professor, as we facilitate the program and evaluate completion. They will just have you contact us.

  1. I’ve done these milestones in a different class, have a job already, or feel as though my career development is beyond what is being asked. Do I really have to complete these milestones?

Yes, but you have options! If you wish, you may complete alternate milestones instead of the ones assigned in your class. This is granted on a case-by-case basis. You will need to contact Jennie Hedrick, Coordinator for Student Advising at the JCC (jnein@uwyo.edu) in order to have your exception granted. Please copy the general JCC email, jcc@uwyo.edu, on your email, and include why you feel you should be granted the exception, which class you are in, and which section.

  1. I did my EPIC assignment, but it was not counted for credit. What happened?

In the event that there is insufficient work done for a milestone that needs approval, a career services officer will contact the student. Occasionally, there are mistakes in the reports that get sent to professors. Ensure that you have done your milestone completely before the due date, clicked the submit button, and have the green check mark. If you feel confident that there has been a mistake made, please contact the JCC. They will confirm and contact your professor.

  1. I’ve been having technical issues with EPIC. Who do I talk to?

Please let us know at the JCC as soon as possible, and we will communicate with the technical team at EPIC to get it solved. If this technical issue prevents you from completing your assignment before the due date, we will, in combination with your professor, assess extensions on a case-by-case basis.

JCC General Questions

  1. I’m planning on going to graduate school or starting my own business. Do I really need a resume?

YES!!!! Most graduate schools require curriculum vitae or resume as part of the application, and even entrepreneurs are asked frequently about their resumes and experience. Having a working resume that you are proud of is essential regardless of your post-graduation plans, particularly considering the volatile nature of life. You never know when an opportunity will pop up that requires a resume—don’t be caught off guard!

  1. Are cover letters necessary?

Sometimes. If it’s asked for, it is a requirement. Never turn in an incomplete job application. If it isn’t…that’s negotiable. It’s generally a good impression to attach one, whether or not it’s read. If it isn’t asked for, you may consider using an objective statement on your resume as a short replacement to give context for your application.

  1. What services does the JCC provide?

We do a lot! We review resumes, look at LinkedIn profiles, facilitate the Internship for Credit and Classroom to Corporate programs, facilitate employer visits, and hold workshops and presentations for students to help them increase their confidence in career planning. We also have several printed materials that you are free to take with you.

  1. When is the best time to start thinking about my future career?

Right now! There are lots of things you can do at any level of education to prepare for life after college. Come make an appointment to discuss your career preparation today!

  1. There’s a particular company that I want to work with. Can the JCC get me a job there?

Unfortunately, we do not currently offer placement services. However, there are several things we can help you with to help you put your best foot forward when you find an opportunity you wish to apply for!

  1. Why should I do an internship? Aren’t they unpaid?

Internships offer very useful experience for students that is often aligned with their degree. It can help you to decide if you really enjoy what you’re studying in practice, and can give you a leg up on the competition when it comes time to look for a post-graduation job! Some internships are unpaid, but most are actually paid—in fact, we generally recommend not taking an unpaid internship unless it is in government or nonprofit industries.  Internships play a big part in career preparation.
