H1N1 (Swine Influenza) Information

SWINE FLU STATUS: The first case of H1N1 was confirmed in Albany County on July 9. Since Aug. 31, the UW Student Health Service has diagnosed 197 students with influenza or influenza-like symptoms; six of those students were diagnosed in the past week. Diagnosis is based on symptoms and in some cases a rapid test for influenza A, not an H1N1 specific test. Many more students are seen at the Student Health Service with symptoms consistent with H1N1 influenza but are not diagnosed with the illness because they do not meet the criteria for H1N1 diagnosis. Swine Flu FAQ

How can I protect myself from swine flu?

  • The best ways to keep the disease from spreading are:
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you don't have tissues handy, cough into your elbow rather than your hand.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Do not share eating and drinking utensils.
  • Avoid contact with sick people.
