Union Wireless Supports UW Engineering and Applied Science Students

June 23, 2011

Robert W. Streeter, Saratoga, Wyo., is the 2010 recipient of the Union Wireless' University of Wyoming Engineering and Applied Science Scholarship. This is the second year of the annual scholarship agreement between Union Wireless and the University.

According to Frank Draney, Director of Human Resources for Union Wireless, "the scholarship was set up to support the children of our local communities who are interested in pursuing an education in a technical field and wish to continue working in Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain region after graduation. The scholarship is reflective of the technical educational pursuits of the owners of our company; John G. Woody, CEO, received his B.S. Electrical Engineering from UW in 1967, and Eric J. Woody, Chief Technology and Operations Officer, graduated from Wyoming with his Electrical Engineering degree in 2001. The Woody family is very committed to supporting the educational development of students with technical backgrounds who are interested in working in our great state and the surrounding area."

Rob, a senior at UW, is pursuing a double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering and will graduate in May 2011. He is the current President of Tau Beta Pi (National Engineering Honor Society) as well as the President of the student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Rob has been a part of a U.W. research team working on the design of a bio-mimetic sensor for the past three years. He has also been a commercial whitewater rafting guide for the last 10 years. When asked about receiving the Union Wireless scholarship Rob said, "Scholarships such as this one inspire learning in those who receive them. I know when my academic achievements are noticed, I am prone to strive further to accomplish more. The motivation gained by being a recipient is invaluable and represents more than just the funding. I will continue working on my undergraduate and then graduate degrees at the University of Wyoming. It is an honor to be recognized for this award."

"The college has enjoyed a strong relationship with Union Telephone for many years. Eric Woody was in my microprocessors class some time back. It was fun to have him in class because of his enthusiastic and energetic approach to his studies and life. The college really appreciates the support from the company in the form of internships for our students, scholarships, and engineering and computer science jobs in Wyoming, said Steven Barrett, Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. "Union Telephone has hired some of our most outstanding graduates in recent years including Alyssa Cooper and Caleb Speiser. Rob Streeter is an outstanding student and a natural match for the Union Telephone Scholarship. I have known him since he was a junior in high school. He has excelled in every aspect of college life including academics, leadership, and community service."

After receiving his bachelor's degree, Rob intends to pursue graduate schooling at U.W., work in the electrical engineering field for a while and then return to academia to pursue a teaching career. Rob's parents, Jeff and Sandy Streeter, currently reside in Saratoga.
