Civil Engineers Awarded Best Paper
March 14, 2011 — Dean Rob Ettema and coauthors (Dr. Gokhan Kirkil and Dr. George
Constantinescu) were selected for the American Society of Civil
Engineers’ 2011 Karl Emil Hilgard Award for best paper in civil
engineering hydraulics. The award is given for their journal paper
titled "Detached Eddy Simulation Investigation of Turbulence at a
Circular Pier with Scour Hole," published in ASCE’s Journal of Hydraulic
Engineering. Dean Ettema and coauthors will be formally recognized for
the award at ASCE’s World Environmental and Water Resources Congress on
May 22-26 in Palm Springs, California.
"In selecting the paper for this award, the committee particularly
recognized its contribution to hydraulic engineering," said Patrick J.
Natale, Executive Director of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The paper uses a numerical technique, Detached Eddy Simulation, and
laboratory experiments to illuminate flow-field turbulence and
foundation erosion at bridge piers in river channels.
