Welcome Back Students!

August 22, 2011 — We are excited that you have chosen a field of study within the College of Engineering and Applied Science. The College's excellent faculty and staff are dedicated to assuring that you receive the best possible educational experience. We encourage you to get to know them – they’re keen to get to know you! Whether you have questions about curriculum, the profession, or a particular course, their doors are open. There is much to be learned as a result of one-on-one interaction with the faculty.

We also encourage you to get involved in the student chapter of the professional society for your discipline or other student societies such as the ASUW Freshman Senate. It is through these professional societies and the Joint Engineering Council that you can have a voice in the policies and decisions that affect your education. Be involved by pursuing interests outside the College. Participate in one or more of the numerous clubs and activities open to all students. Involvement outside of the classroom will give you leadership, teamwork, and communications experiences that will serve you well throughout your career, in addition to resulting in lifelong friendships.

What you learn in the classroom will be greatly enhanced when you participate in activities such as -- a research experience, an international experience, or an internship experience. These experiences will help you develop the confidence necessary to launch a successful career in engineering or computer science. A research experience will prepare you for graduate education and give you the skills to become a lifelong learner – the ultimate goal of undergraduate education. An international experience is essential if you are to contribute to, and understand, the global economy in which you will live and work. Also, an internship experience assures that you are prepared to be immediately productive in the work place upon graduation. In addition, you may want to consider involvement in the many student activities, clubs, and organizations on campus. Involvement outside of the classroom will give you leadership, teamwork, and communications experiences that will serve you well throughout your career, resulting in lifelong friendships.

Whether this is your first semester or your last semester we hope that it is successful and stimulating.
