Tau Beta Pi - Outstanding Staff Award - Susan McCormack
June 14, 2012 — Almost 25 years ago, Susan McCormack came to our College from the Physics Department on a satellite project assignment. When the project was finished, Dean Sam Hakes said, "Come down to the Dean's Office and we'll find something for you to do." Three deans, five associate deans, and thousands of students later, she has never been bored, and still enjoys the crank-it-up-a-notch pace her job demands. She has worn many hats in the Dean's Office, including a 16-year stint producing the College's quarterly, Foresight. Many of the alumni she interviewed and photographed became life-long friends. A former high school English teacher, one of Susan's favorite assignments was the 15 years she spent as coordinator of the Engineering Summer Program for high school juniors. It was a special treat to have them choose UW, watch them throughout their academic careers, attend their weddings, and exchange Christmas cards, many with photos of their children.
In 2005, Wayman Wing (BSCE/'47) and his wife, Eugenia, endowed a scholarship in Susan's name, citing her "dedication, enormous energy, and efficient manner." Susan considers it a privilege to have been a part of so many lives, and refers to the current students and alumni as "my kids"... no matter what their ages.
