Laurie Bonini, the coordinator for student advising in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), was named the 2016 Outstanding Link Coordinator for Region IV by the national office of The Order of the Engineer. CEAS Dean Michael Pishko presented her with the award Wednesday.

Bonini assisted the Wyoming Engineering Society (WES) to implement a ring ceremony at their annual meeting in February. Her efforts allowed the WES to host its first ring ceremony at the convention in Sheridan, Wyo., earning her a nomination for the Order award. The award was developed to recognize outstanding efforts of link coordinators throughout the nation who have provided exemplary service to the Order in development, organization and administration for the Regional Link Ceremonies. Individuals are recognized each year in four regions of the U.S.

“Her door is always open and she always welcomes students with a friendly face,” CEAS Associate Dean Steve Barrett says. “It’s no surprise that she’s been recognized by an outside agency. She went above and beyond in helping and that’s who she is.”

The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster “a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer.” Since 1970, ceremonies have been hosted across the country at which graduate and registered engineers are invited to accept the Obligation of the Engineer and a stainless steel ring. The ceremonies are conducted by Links of the Order.

“It is nice to be recognized but the organization is what is really great,” Bonini says. “The whole concept of the Order means students are taking an ethical obligation, and to be part of that is what’s really rewarding.”
