A group from the University of Wyoming will head to the East Coast for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) annual convention.

The participants will travel to Boston for NSBE’s 42nd annual convention Wednesday, March 23 through Sunday, March 27. The group will have two faculty representatives, including Professor Ruben Gamboa (computer science) and Professor Jackie Leonard (elementary and early education). Students attending the convention include UW NSBE President Kalu Okonkwo, Jaiyeola Adeniyi, Victor Anthony, Olujuwon Dare, Bismarck Echegile, Hebatallah Hesham Eltoukhy, Ikechukwu Ezugwu, Clinton Ghee, Yeshet Gobena, Jake Koney and Rostin Okamba.

General sessions, open forums, a career fair and notable keynote speakers will highlight the convention. Issues like job interviews and interacting in a business setting will be addressed by professionals in the industry.

“We’re trying to become better professionals, build professional networks and build leadership skills to bring back to campus,” Okonkwo says. “One of our chapter missions is to contribute to the community and this university is a community.”

The NSBE is an organization built upon efforts to increase the number of black engineers worldwide. The nonprofit organization was founded in 1975. With more than 31,000 members around the world, NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”

NSBE is dedicated to success of black engineering students and professionals, offering members leadership training, professional development activities, mentoring opportunities and career placement services. There are 394 active chapters, including 242 collegiate, 70 professional and 82 pre-collegiate. The world headquarters are located in Alexandria, Va.
