More accolades are on the way for the University of Wyoming student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Faculty adviser Ryan Kobbe and his group came away with the following awards, announced in April:

  • 2016 Distinguished Chapter Award Region 7
  • 2016 Richard J. Scranton Outstanding Community Service Award
  • 2016 Ridgway Finalist

The Distinguished Chapter Award is given to the most outstanding student organization in the region, while the Richard J. Scranton Outstanding Community Service Award is conferred upon just a single chapter each year. Scranton was a longtime supporter and advocate for students and his efforts promoted community service as an integral part of ASCE Student Chapter activities.

“Your chapter exemplifies the tradition of public service that Mr. Scranton believed was an essential element of the student learning experience, and advances our profession by showing how civil engineers are truly making a difference in their communities, nation and world,” says Leslie Payne, Director of Student and Younger Member Programs for ASCE.

The UW group was named as a Ridgway Finalist, an honor earned by just five of the 339 ASCE student chapters.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the group for all the work they put in every year,” Kobbe says. “To be in the top five of 339 ASCE student chapters is quite an accomplishment. The students should also be very proud of the Richard J. Scranton Outstanding Community Service Award. This is only given to one chapter annually, and the competition is very tough.”

These awards come on the heels of a very successful 2015, as the UW chapter earned four distinctions from the national office.
