A University of Wyoming student earned second place in a research-paper competition sponsored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).

Ali Ghasemzadeh Khoshgroudi, a Ph.D. candidate in civil and architectural engineering, was informed his paper, titled “Work Zone Weather-related Crash Characteristics and Injury Severity in North Carolina Using HSIS Dataset,” was selected as the second-place entry from the 2016 Highway Safety Information System Student Paper Competition.

The HSIS Data Contest is jointly administered by ITE and the Federal Highway Administration. It challenges undergraduate and graduate students to use roadway data to research a safety topic and prepare for a career in highway safety. Students investigate topics that advance highway safety and to develop a paper (2,500-5,000 words) to document the original research.

Ghasemzadeh Khoshgroudi earned an invitation to be recognized during the ITE Awards Banquet Luncheon at the organization’s annual meeting Aug. 15. Assistant Professor Mohamed M. Ahmed is his faculty adviser and is invited to attend the meeting.
