The Department of Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) has a new leader, as Vladimir Alvarado assumed duties this week as department head.

An associate professor at the University of Wyoming, Alvarado officially took over as department head on July 1. Previously, Alvarado served as the associate department head for chemical and petroleum engineering. He takes over the post from Professor Denny Coon, who was the interim department head over the past year.

“The Department of Chemical Engineering has talented and dedicated faculty,” Alvarado says. “They are developing a culture of education, research and service focused on an integrated learning experience that uses active classroom methods, multidisciplinary research on bioengineering, materials and processes, and serves economic diversity and core expertise in Wyoming with national and international reach.”

Alvarado’s area of expertise is enhanced oil recovery and transport in porous media. He leads the Improved Oil and Gas Recovery Center of Excellence in the CEAS and School of Energy Resources. Alvarado earned his physics bachelor’s degree in Venezuela, his exploration and production master’s in France and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

“I would like to express my great appreciation to Professor Denny Coon, who served as interim head of chemical engineering this past year,” CEAS Dean Michael Pishko says. “The college and department owe him a great deal of thanks.”
