Consul General St├ęphane Lessard will speak at UW on Thursday, April 27.

The Canadian Consul General in Denver, Stéphane Lessard, will visit the University of Wyoming on Thursday, April 27 to meet with university and community leaders, explore areas of collaboration between Wyoming and Canada, and engage with Canadian students and staff at UW.

He will also participate in a roundtable discussion titled “Wyoming-Canada Links in Higher Education: Preparing the Workforce of the Future.” Joining Consul General Lessard on the roundtable will be UW President Laurie Nichols, as well as representatives from the UW College of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Energy Resources, and Holland & Hart Law. This event is free and open to the public and begins at 4 p.m. at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center in Laramie.

One of the highlights of the Consul General’s visit will be to celebrate the formalized Memorandum of Understanding between UW and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). The University of Wyoming and SAIT are also in the process of finalizing an articulation agreement between SAIT Petroleum Technology and the UW Petroleum Engineering Department, which will be signed later this summer.

“Canada is very excited about this new partnership, not only for what it will offer these great students but also for what it represents about the great Wyoming-Canada partnership,” Lessard says. “Our two nations are home to many of the finest institutions of higher education in the world. With trade and commerce between Canada and the U.S. being so interconnected, it only makes sense that the competitive workforce of tomorrow will be educated together, today. UW and SAIT are leaders in petroleum engineering, and I look forward to seeing this partnership blossom into new areas of opportunity for our students and our countries as well.”
Dean Michael Pishko of the UW College of Engineering & Applied Science provided input, saying, “We are very happy to see and encourage a growing partnership with the Canadian institutions.  SAIT students enrolled at UW come to us with a strong technical background, which allows them to perform very well in our Petroleum Engineering program.”

Mary Katherine Scott, who leads UW’s International Programs, echoes this enthusiasm for the formalized UW-SAIT partnership. “UW’s connection and commitment to Canadian partner institutions are strong. The UW-SAIT partnership in particular has a wonderful history of meaningful collaboration. The similarities in the geography, communities and major industries of our respective regions mean that our partnership has much potential to grow in the future.”

Lessard joined Global Affairs Canada at the Consulate General of Canada in August 2016. As Canada's Consul General in Denver, Lessard oversees a team of 17 people who work within Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Utah and Wyoming to strengthen trade and economic ties; enhance political, academic and cultural links; and assist Canadians visiting or living in the five-state U.S. Mountain West region.
