An event to welcome and inform new students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) took place Tuesday evening on the campus of the University of Wyoming.

The CEAS Freshmen Convocation drew nearly 175 attendees, which included freshmen, transfer students, faculty and staff. The annual event serves as a way to introduce new students to classmates and open dialogue between various college groups to spur engagement.

CEAS Associate Dean Steve Barrett offered a welcome to begin the evening’s activities.

“We are so excited that you are here,” he says. “The message we want to leave you with is we want you to have a successful first six weeks, a successful first year and a successful degree program journey.”

Shortly after opening remarks, conversation and laughter filled the Wyoming Union ballroom as the college’s newest members chatted with table leaders about topics like crisis counseling, professional courtesy and conduct, engineering societies, academic resources, study abroad, academic dishonesty and career services.

Makennan Hurd, 18, of Sammamish, Wash., attended with roommate and fellow mechanical engineering major Jonathan Nyberg, 19, of Cheyenne.

Hurd says he chose UW for many reasons, and highlighted the affordable tuition rate, the location, the program prestige and says his father is an alumni. Nyberg chose UW because he believes the programs are rigorous and felt the education will set him up for success in his future career.

“We met some people within the major and learned about some of the student society programs,” Hurd says. “The free food was a bonus. I saw the student society programs and I was immediately interested. It was a beneficial event to learn more about the college and meet new classmates.”
