Dr. B.L. Ramakrishna will discuss an international engineering initiative with UW students and faculty.

Dr. B.L. Ramakrishna of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, will serve as the HT Person Distinguished Speaker for the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Wyoming.

Ramakrishna is the director of the Grand Challenges Scholarship Program at the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). His presentation will be Oct. 27 at 3:10 p.m. in the Classroom Building, Room 306.

The presentation will cover several topics, one of which highlights the NAE’s Grand Challenges for Engineering. The program is an international initiative promoting engineering education to ensure sustainable life, improve health outcomes, enhance protection from security threats, and improve quality of life all over the globe.

Another portion of the presentation will describe the scholarship program that addresses the need to prepare the workforce to solve “grand challenges.” The program focuses on providing five competencies: research/creative project experience, multidisciplinary training, business/entrepreneurial mindset, multicultural understanding and social consciousness. Students with these skills sets and mindsets will be ready to be the engineers and leaders of the 21st century.

“The goals of the Grand Challenge Scholarship Program and the goals of the UW College of Engineering and Applied Science have significant commonality,” HT Person Professor Dennis Coon says. “More than 120 universities worldwide have committed to participation in this program. This visit by Dr. Ramakrishna is an exceptional opportunity to explore the potential for our participation as well.  Participation the Grand Challenge Scholarship Program could make a very strong statement about the quality of education with CEAS.”
