A newly established resource team assisted incoming students preparing for fall 2018 classes in the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Orientation sessions for new students took place throughout June, and the CEAS welcomed its incoming class of about 350 new freshmen and 50 new transfer students.

Along with tours of campus and a glimpse into UW life, the orientation sessions included advising and registration for fall courses. The incoming engineering and computer science students were guided through the process via the new CEAS Student Advising Center. Along with support from the respective departments and faculty, the center has taken the lead with its seven advisors and dedicated space in the building.

“As a result of the campus-wide initiative to improve advising at UW, the College of Engineering and Applied Science chose to implement a professional advising center,” CEAS Manager of Academic Advising Laurie Bonini says. “This center provides a centralized location for student services within the college, with a focus on consistency and accountability for student success. Our advisors come from different backgrounds, with different areas of expertise. They’ll work with departments and faculty mentors to provide high-quality, proactive advising.”

The new advising team includes Bonini, Jennifer Martin, Kris Brewer, Conrad Chavez, Jason Svare, Annie Robbins and Char Lessenger. The center, which is part of the college’s Susan McCormack Center for Student Success, has streamlined the advising process and made it more efficient for both students and departments to increase student engagement.

“I’m so excited to have such a great team here to assist our students in achieving their academic goals,” Bonini says.
