Electrical Engineering Scholarships

Dick R. Adams Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Graduate Fellowship

Dick R. Adams graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.S. in electrical engineering in 1965. Following a successful career at Amoco Corporation, the Adams are enjoying retirement in Riverton, Wyoming. Dick and his wife Jane support the College of Engineering and Applied Science through this graduate fellowship endowment which is used to make fellowship grants to graduate students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Applied Science electrical and computer engineering program.

R. Kenneth Beach Scholarship

This scholarship was established with contributions made by alumni, students, and faculty from the College of Engineering and Applied Science when the late Professor R. Kenneth Beach retired from the electrical engineering faculty in 1983. Professor Beach was a native of Lusk, WY, and received a degree in electrical engineering from UW in 1940. He completed his graduate work at the Illinois Institute of Technology and worked for Curtis Wright Aircraft Co. during World War II. Following the War he returned to Wyoming to teach in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He is a past president of the Wyoming Engineering Society. Over the years, Professor Beach and his wife, Charleen, continued to make generous contributions to this scholarship endowment.

Jerry J. Cupal Scholarship

Professor Jerry Cupal, a Michigan native, graduated from Michigan Technological University with a B.S. in physics in 1962. After working as a research engineer at 3M, he returned to Michigan Tech and received an M.S. in physics in 1967. He then began his teaching career at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa before coming to UW as a Ph.D. student. He received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from UW in 1974. After working for the U.S. Forest Service, Wyoming Highway Department and Department of Atmospheric Science, Jerry joined the faculty in the electrical engineering department in 1983. He has been instrumental in the development of several courses associated with digital systems design and microprocessors at UW. He has also been a stalwart in the very important capstone design sequence in electrical engineering. Cupal is well known for his outstanding mentoring of students and this activity is reflected in his selection as a "Top Prof " by Mortar Board, the university-wide senior honorary. He currently resides in Laramie and pursues his interests in fishing, hunting, gardening, and golf. He continues to help the department by teaching senior design. Jerry enjoys relationships with the many students, friends, family members and colleagues who have benefited from his enthusiasm and dedication over the past several decades.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Scholarship

In order to encourage outstanding incoming freshmen to enter UW and to pursue a degree in electrical engineering, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering awards scholarships. Alumni and corporate gifts to the department provide the funds for these scholarships.

Raymond G. Jacquot Scholarship

Professor Raymond G. Jacquot, a Casper native, graduated from UW with B.S.M.E. and M.S.M.E. degrees in 1960 and 1962, respectively. He received the Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1969. He began his 41-year teaching career in 1960, as supply instructor of mechanical engineering. Since 1969, he served the electrical engineering department at UW in all faculty ranks until his retirement as professor emeritus of electrical engineering in 2001. Ray is a registered professional engineer and a past president of the Wyoming Engineering Society. He is the recipient of numerous UW, regional and national teaching awards, and held an abiding interest in engineering education throughout his career. He continues to reside in Laramie and pursues his interests in writing, amateur archaeology, painting, and mountaineering.

Ray continues to enjoy his relationships with the many students, friends, family members and colleagues who provided funding for this scholarship.

John B. Keyes Memorial Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. John H. Keyes, Jr. of Englewood, Colorado to honor the memory of their son John B. Keyes. John B. Keyes was a native of Wyoming, graduating from Natrona County High School in Casper, and a graduate of UW in 1976, with a degree in electrical engineering. He was employed by General Electric Company at the time of his death. This scholarship is awarded to junior and senior class level students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Clifford and Shirley Rudy Electrical Engineering Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. John H. Keyes, Jr. of Englewood, Colorado to honor the memory of their son John B. Keyes. John B. Keyes was a native of Wyoming, graduating from Natrona County High School in Casper, and a graduate of UW in 1976, with a degree in electrical engineering. He was employed by General Electric Company at the time of his death. This scholarship is awarded to junior and senior class level students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Francis M. Long Scholarship

Dr. Francis Long joined the UW College Department of Electrical Engineering faculty in 1956. He received his B.S. from the University of Iowa and M.S. and Ph.D. from Iowa State University. In 1971 Dr. Long was named among ten faculty members as Outstanding Educators of America. He was also named as the UW George Duke Humphrey Distinguished Faculty Award Recipient for 1974.

A leader in the field of bioengineering research, Dr. Long expanded the studies by developing sensors which include multichannel transmitters sending heart rate, EEG and EMG information from free roaming wild animals. From 1977 to 1987, he ably served the Department of Electrical Engineering as department head. When Dr. Long elected to retire in 1995, his family, colleagues, and students chose to recognize his distinguished career by providing the funding for this named scholarship.

G. J. Guthrie Nicholson Power Engineering Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of G.J. "Nick" Nicholson, to enhance the power program in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Mr. Nicholson spent his early childhood on the family cattle ranch near Meeteetse, WY. An MIT graduate, Mr. Nicholson worked for twenty years with Consolidated Edison of New York. At the time of his retirement he was the chief engineer for the U.S. Naval Degaussing Station in Newport, RI. Mrs. Nicholson was born in Switzerland but came to love Wyoming when she and "Nick" retired to Thermopolis in 1985. Before his death in 1991, Mr. Nicholson made a gift of property in Rhode Island to the UW Foundation. This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students majoring in electrical engineering who are doing research in the "Nick" Nicholson Power Engineering Lab. The scholarship was established by his late wife Klara Nicholson.

G. J. Guthrie Nicholson Power Engineering Graduate Fellowship

These fellowships are provided to students doing graduate work in the field of power engineering. Mrs. Nicholson maintained strong ties to the College of Engineering and the research that is being done by Dr. Sadrul Ula and his students in the "Nick" Nicholson Power Engineering Lab.

Dr. Charles Norman Rhodine Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Charles Norman Rhodine Engineering Scholarship was established by the family of Dr. Rhodine after his untimely death in 2002. This scholarship is earmarked for upper classmen or graduate students in electrical/computer engineering. Dr. Rhodine was a UW engineering professor for 35 years. He was dedicated to teaching and his students. His students saw him as a professor who knew it backwards and forwards and "told it like it was." He always took time to help them when they bogged down and patted them on the back when they were on their feet again. He had boundless enthusiasm and an endless capacity in the performance of his duties as a teaching professor. His career also included work with Atomics International, NASA, many research projects and publications throughout the years and active participation in professional organizations. In an effort to perpetuate his interest in education, which was his primary focus, his family established this scholarship.

Eric Dobby and Ramona Rogers Memorial Scholarship

Eric Dobby and Ramona Rogers were both seniors in electrical engineering when they lost their lives in an automobile accident in March of 1988. Eric was from Casper, where he graduated from Natrona High School and attended Casper College. Ramona graduated from Cheyenne East High School as class valedictorian. She was also a state high school rodeo barrel racing champion. Toni and Warner Rogers, and Don and Jacque Dobby established this permanent fund in remembrance of Eric and Ramona.

Gary E. Smith Electrical Engineering Scholarship

This scholarship is given in memory of Gary E. Smith, who received a B.S. in 1969 and an M.S. in 1970 in electrical engineering from UW. Prior to his death, Mr. Smith was employed as the general manager of Goldco Industries, Inc. in Loveland, Colorado. The owners of Goldco, Richard and Diane Vander Meer, thought so highly of his ability, courage and character that they have established this endowed scholarship to honor his career and memory.

Richard G. Wunder Electrical Engineering Scholarship

Richard G. Wunder received a degree in electrical engineering from UW in 1969. He was employed by US WEST in Cheyenne as the manager of electrical protection until the time of his death in 1992. Before he died, Mr. Wunder and his wife, Sandra, established a living trust which will eventually leave a substantial part of their estate to this scholarship endowment. This endowed scholarship was funded with memorials from Mr. Wunder's family and friends. Mrs. Wunder continues to generously fund the scholarship. This scholarship honors the career and life of Richard G. Wunder and is intended to assist worthy young men and women in achieving their educational goals. The scholarship is awarded to juniors and seniors majoring in electrical engineering.

Rocky Mountain Power Electrical EN Scholarship

An Electrical Engineering student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, in good standing. The Rocky Mountain Power Foundation is part of the PacifiCorp Foundation, one of the largest utilityendowed foundations in the United States. The foundation was created in 1988 by PacifiCorp, an electric utility serving 1.8 million customers in six Western states as Rocky Mountain Power (Utah, Wyoming and Idaho) and Pacific Power (Oregon, Washington and California). The foundation’s mission, through charitable investments, is to support growth and vitality of the communities served by Rocky Mountain Power and Pacific Power.

Charles and Gina Roman EN Scholarship

Charles “Chuck” Roman valued his time at UW. Growing up out east, he came to UW for the distinctive educational experience both in and out of the classroom. The Charles and Gina Roman Engineering Scholarship supports scholarships for students who are majoring in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Wyoming. Recipients are undergraduates or graduate students who live anywhere in the United States.

Tatman Family Scholarship Endowment in College of Engineering & Applied Science

Distributions from the fund shall be used to award scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the College of Engineering. In making a scholarship award or awards, preference shall be given to students who possess one or more of the following characteristics: 1) An undergraduate or graduate student in Mechanical Engineering; 2) An undergraduate or graduate student in Electrical Engineering; 3) An undergraduate or graduate student in Computer Science.
