Farmers Teaching Farmers

The Wyoming Building Farmers program builds farm community and farmer capacity through classroom and experiential learning for beginning farmers (0 – 10 yrs exp). The series of 8 evening classes is designed to help new farmers explore farming as a business and provide intermediate and experienced farmers with tools and ideas to refine and enhance their business management, production, and marketing skills.

Who Should Participate

  • New Farmers: <1 year experience
  • Intermediate Farmers: production/marketing manager or sole operator, for <3 years
  • Experienced Farmers: production/marketing manager or sole operator, >3 years

Concept

Intermediate and Experienced farmers fuel the learning environment. Dinner provides time for socializing and networking. Sessions explore content useful to all levels of experience. There are text and online assignments. This program thrives with participation from farmers of all levels of experience.

Schedule

  • Tues, Jan 7 – “What I learned in Year 1” – A panel of young farmers. Course orientation. Time management.
  • Tues, Jan 14 – Elements of a business plan – Cole Ehmke. Vision, mission, goals, and SWOT.
  • Tues, Jan 21 – Markets, pricing, and principles – Cindy Garretson-Weibel. A panel of commodity and local food farmers.
  • Tues, Jan 28 – What do the numbers say? A Farmer’s Focus – Melissa Reuter. Record keeping – Cole Ehmke
  • Tues, Feb 4 – Managing risk – crop and personal – Larry French. How to write a land lease – Sandra Frost
  • Tues, Feb 11 – People who will keep the farm going? Your banker – Todd Ernst; Your family – Chris Edwards
  • Tues, Feb 18 and 25 – Presentation of class participant business plans.* Mentors.
