GROWTH HABIT: Perennial, bushy, reproducing by seed and creeping rootstocks.
LEAVES: Alternate, under surface covered with minute white hairs. Upper surface smooth, green, oval to lance-shaped, deeply segmented and coarsely toothed.
STEMS: Branched, bushy, 4-18 inches tall.
FLOWER: Male flower clusters yellow, on solitary, elongated, terminal branches. Female flower green, inconspicuous, formed in pairs in leaf axils below male flowers.
ROOTS: Extensive creeping rootstocks.
SEEDS: One or more achenes in a light brown bur with conical spines.
OTHER: Native plant of the plains region.
