GROWTH HABIT: Annual grass, erect, Reproduces by seed only.
LEAVES: Sheaths open, ligule membranous. Leaf to 5/8 inches wide. Seedling leaves twist counter clockwise.
STEMS: Simple, hollow, in small tufts, to 4 ft. tall.
INFLORESCENCES: Open panicle 4-18 inches long.
SPIKELET: Drooping, with 2 to 3 long black awns attached to the florets.
SEEDS: Yellow to black, oval, 1/4 to � inch long usually hairy. Awns twisted and bent to form right angles at maturity.
ROOTS: Fibrous.
OTHER: A serious problem in spring seeded small grain.
