Five architects and contractors will present material at a "Green Building – What is it?" workshop in Cody sponsored by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES).

The presentations are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Grizzly Room of the Park County Public Library.

Information will be presented on the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and its Wyoming chapter, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, the Greybull Elementary School project and a contractor's role in green construction. A walking tour of the Park County Library renovation green features will be included.

Presenters include:

  • Randy Hafer of High Plains Architects, Billings, Mont., who will discuss definitions and terms in "Green Building: What? Why? How?"
  • John Griffith with Groathouse Construction of Cody and Casper, who will explain the USGBC. Griffith is president of the newly formed USGBC-Wyoming Chapter.
  • Karen Kelly of CTA Architects Engineers, Billings, Mont., who will conduct a walk-around of the Park County Library and point out the green construction features of the renovation.
  • After lunch, Dave Wellington of Plan One/Architects, Cody, will talk about "The Greybull Elementary School Project," a LEED-certified building.
  • Gary Olson, manager of Preconstruction Services for L.M. Olson Inc., Rawlins, and a LEED-accredited professional, will talk about the Greybull school project, a LEED-certified building, from the contractor's point of view.

The USGBC provides a framework for assessing building performance and sustainability through its LEED Green Building Rating System. Buildings are scored according to how many criteria they meet. High-scoring buildings may be awarded silver, gold or platinum awards.

Workshop registration is $10 per person. To register for the workshop and lunch, contact UW CES Educator Sandra Frost in Powell at (307) 754-8836 or sfrost1@uwyo.edu.
