FAQs about C&I:

What is C&I?

C&I stands for Curriculum and Instruction. The Curriculum and Instruction graduate programs are administered and operated through the departments of Educational Studies, Elementary and Early Childhood Education, and Secondary Education. Together, these departments offer a Master of Arts degree in Education with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction.

Where do I find the form for the Letters of Recommendation?

When is the deadline for applying to the master's degree in C&I?

Our deadline (screening) dates are as follows: October 1 for spring admission; March 1st for summer/fall admission.

Is the GRE required for admission?

We do not require GRE testing for our Master's degree.

How much teaching experience do I need?

Applicants for the Master of Arts in Education with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction are required to be certified teachers with one year of teaching experience.

Can I take classes before I'm accepted into the program?

Yes. Graduate School will allow up to 12 hours be transferred into a degree program.

Is the program online?

No; however many courses have online components and intensive weekends.

What application materials are required for the program?

  • Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Transcripts reflecting most recent degree (3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited institution plus transcripts from all other schools attended
  • Letter of Intent describing career goals and reasons for pursuing a master's degree at the University of Wyoming
  • A TOEFL score of 525 (paper-based), 197 (computer exam) or above is required for international students.
  • Teaching certificate and one year K-12 teaching experience or equivalent is required.  In exceptional cases an approved teaching internship during the first semester of enrollment may be substituted for prior teaching.
  • Meeting minimal admissions criteria does NOT automatically insure admission to the program.

Do I have to come to Laramie to take classes?

No.  Most of our classes are offered compressed video.  Some courses offer intensive weekends and online components.

I'm a post-baccalaureate student. Do I need to apply for the master's program in C&I?

Yes, Post-baccalaureate students can opt to apply for the master's program in C&I if they wish to. They follow the same admissions procedures as other applicants.

Does this degree lead to certification?

No, the Master's degree in Education with a Specialization in Curriculum and Instruction is designed for educators who are already certified and who have taught in K-12 classrooms for at least one year. Thus, the degree does not lead to certification. Individuals who are interested in obtaining an initial teaching certification in Wyoming should seek information from the Office of Teacher Education http://www.uwyo.edu/ted.

How do I register for courses?

Once admitted, students can register for courses on the university's WyoWeb http://wyoweb.uwyo.edu.

How do I get my program of study completed and filed?

You will be instructed on filing your program of study when you enroll in EDCI 5400 Midpoint Portfolio.  You will take this class when you have completed at least 12 graduate credits.

How do I put together my committee?

During your first or second semester of coursework, consult with your advisor about faculty members who would be appropriate as committee members. For master's degree students, two committee members (including the advisor) should be faculty members in Curriculum and Instruction; a third faculty member should come from outside the three departments that make up Curriculum and Instruction. Once three faculty members have agreed to serve as committee members, submit a list of the committee members to the Office Associate who will make a copy for your file and forward to the Registrar's Office.

How long do I have to complete the degree?

All work on a master's degree must be completed within six (6) calendar years from the date of admission.

How many credits is the degree?

A minimum of 32 semester hours is required.  All course work and degree requirements are approved by the student's graduate committee.
