Former department chair, Mr. Sherman was the first faculty member hired for the Criminal Justice program at the University of Wyoming.

Before coming to the University in 1994 he was the director of the Wyoming Department of Family Services , 1991-1994 and director of the Board of Charities and Reform (Institutions of Corrections, Juvenile Corrections, Mental Health and Aging) for the State of Wyoming, 1988-1991. In addition to working for the State of Wyoming, Gary has worked as the director of many Missouri State Agencies including the Missouri Division of Youth Services. He has served under three governors including former Attorney General of the United States, John Ashcroft.

Mr. Sherman also is a training consultant for various National and Federal correction agencies and prisons as well as social service agencies and private organizations.

In addition to receiving the Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award in 1999, Gary has received numerous Top 10 Teacher Awards.  Recipient of the 2009 Seibold Award.
