Active Youth

Children and teenagers should be active for 60 minutes a day. Physical activity is very important for youth because it helps them to:

  • Have a healthy weight

  • Learn new skills

  • Have strong bones

  • Have strong muscles

  • Be happy

  • Stay healthy

Playing outside in the yard or on the playground is one way youth can stay active. Playing sports or games is another way. You can help them stay healthy for life by being active with them. Children learn from watching you. When you walk or bike or play with them, they are starting to learn healthy habits.

If you aren't sure how to help your kids stay active, these tips can help you:

Encourage spending time outside

Walking, hiking, biking, and running are good outside activities. Games like soccer and basketball are also great outdoor activities. The fresh air is good for the body and mind.

Cut back on TV, phone, and computer time

Children should spend less than 2 hours a day watching TV or on the other electronic devises. Encourage them to do activities away from the screen.

Find activities your child likes

There are many community teams for youth. Playing sports with their friends is one way to make sure your children loves being active. It might take a few tries, but encourage your child to try several different activities. You never know which one will fill them with joy.
