Is the student responsible for assigned readings even if they are not discussed in class? - Top
Yes. Always remember this is your education and ultimately the student’s responsibility to read the material. If an assigned reading is not discussed in class, as the student you can ask questions if you would like to go over the reading.

When are you supposed to file your program of study? - Top
During the first year of your program is preferred, so as to carefully plan your entire class schedule.

What is a committee and who serves on the committee? - Top
Your committee will consist of three professors. Two professors will be members of the Department of Counselor Education and one professor will be an outside member from another college or department who is also a member of UW Graduate faculty. Your committee approves your program of study and helps write and grade your comps and B paper.

When does the B project have to be finished? - Top
Your B project needs to be completed the semester before you complete comprehensive exams.

What is the difference between a B project and a thesis? What are the strengths of both and does one prepare you better for Ph.D. work? - Top
A "B" project is associated more with practical application of counseling. A video or CD with accompanying reflection paper may demonstrate a student’s clinical skills. Also, a manuscript prepared for publication may offer practical application of skills and knowledge that is a student’s focus.

A "thesis" often encompasses a quantitative or qualitative research study that involves client treatment. Often, an additional research course that complements EDRE 5530 is required for your work.

Both are capstone events that can prepare you for Ph.D. work, especially if you publish in a refereed journal.
