Two renowned scholars on multicultural issues visit the University of Wyoming College of Education Oct. 10-11, visiting with faculty and students and offering public talks on their respective expertise areas.
Carmen Montecinos, who serves on the faculty of the University of Chile-Valparaiso, presents a talk on “School Leadership Teams: The Chilean Case” beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the UW Foundation House, 1200 Ivinson Ave.
Christine Sleeter, a faculty member at California State University-Monterrey Bay, discusses “Intellectually Challenging Teaching in Multicultural, Bilingual Classrooms” beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday, also at the UW Foundation House.
As a former official of the Chilean Ministry of Education, Montecinos is a leader in that nation’s efforts to initiate education reform. She is a prolific scholar and author of more than 30 peer-reviewed articles on the role of race and genera, international and multicultural education, and assessment/evaluation in education.
Sleeter is the author of numerous books related to multicultural education and social justice. Her book, Making Choices: Five Approaches to Race, Class and Gender, is perhaps the most assigned text in introduction to multicultural education classes. Sleeter’s newest work, Un/Standardizing the Curriculum, discusses how the “standards” movement is an overt attempt to narrow the curriculum and thus undermine multicultural education.
In addition to their public presentations, each scholar will meet individually with interested UW faculty members and visit teacher education classes.
The scholars’ visits are sponsored by the UW College of Education, the President’s Advisory Council on Minorities’ and Women’s Affairs, the UW Lab School, and the UW Department of Educational Studies.
