NEWS RELEASE – BASOM AND WEAR INSTITUTES
July 20, 2003

Two annual summer institutes for educators will be held on the University of Wyoming campus the week of July 28 through August 1, 2003. The Sixth Annual Basom School Leadership Institute will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, July 29-30, and the Tenth Annual Wear School Law Institute will follow on the Thursday and Friday, July 31-August 1. All events will be held in the UW College of Law.

The two institutes have become fixed on the Wyoming education calendar. The institutes recognize Dr. Myron Basom and Dr. Maurice Wear, both distinguished former faculty members of the Educational Leadership Department at the University of Wyoming which sponsors the institutes. Teachers, principals, superintendents and district central office administrators, school board members, university faculty, administrators, and students, attorneys, parents, and others interested in educational issues are invited to attend. Some of the speakers include Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal, Perry Zirkel, Professor, Lehigh University, Peg Portscheller, Consultant, Ted Adams, Superintendent, Long Island, NY, Trent Blankenship, State Superintendent of Schools, Pat McClurg, Dean of College of Education, University of Wyoming, and Fred Hartmeister, Associate Dean, Texas Tech University.

Behind legislation has created some bold mandates for the public schools in Wyoming and the U.S., as well as for colleges and universities. These mandates have effected educators and schools significantly. The Department of Educational Leadership faculty thought that conversations, sharing, and networking would be an appropriate forum to help everyone work on providing the best teaching and leadership conditions for our schools. Strands for conversation for both institutes include: effective teaching strategies, student assessment, professional development, school systems, moral dimensions/equity issues, highly qualified teacher issues, leadership capacity, preventive legal systems, meeting standards, curriculum, data-driven decisions, technology, and any other school best practices. By sharing ideas, strategies, best practices, etc. with colleagues, we hope participants will benefit and be able to take away new ideas, strategies, and thinking from the institutes. Also, the institutes provide an opportunity for Wyoming educators to see friends, make new networkings, and have fun.
Registration for attendees is now being accepted. Because of the economy and reduced budgets, the fees for this year’s institutes have been reduced. Registration fee is $125. The fee for UW students is $50. Credit options in addition to the fees are again available including one of the following: one PTSB credit, UW graduate credit, and graduate enrichment credit. CLE credits for participation at the Wear School Law Institute are being applied for.
The fee for presenters and facilitators is $50.
