The Seventh Annual Basom School Leadership Institute and
the Eleventh Annual Wear School Law Institute will be held jointly for
the first time in the University of Wyoming College of Law.
The institute recognizes Dr. Myron Basom and Dr. Maurice Wear; both distinguished
former faculty members of the Educational Leadership Department at the University
of Wyoming, which sponsors the institute. Teachers, principals, superintendents,
district central office administrators, school board members, university faculty,
students, attorneys, parents, and others interested in educational issues are
invited to attend. This year's institute also recognizes the late Jesse
Vialpando, former Albany County School District board member and long time
UW Employment Practices Officer.
The theme of this year's institute is, "Quality Leadership and Preventive
Law: The Pursuit of Equity." The No Child Left Behind legislation
has created some bold mandates for the public schools in Wyoming and the U.S.,
as well as for colleges and universities. These mandates have affected
educators and equity in schools significantly. The institute provides
opportunities to learn about and discuss key issues. By sharing ideas,
strategies, best practices, etc. with colleagues, participants will benefit
and be able to apply new ideas. Also, the institute provides an opportunity
for Wyoming educators to see friends, establish new networks, and have fun.
Institute Honorees
The Basom School Leadership Institute recognizes Myron Basom who was an educational
leadership faculty member at UW for many years. His positive leadership influence
assisted the growth and development of many individuals, schools, school districts,
and the State of Wyoming. Myron served as executive director of the Wyoming
School Board Association on his arrival from Kansas in 1966. He was a faculty
member in the UW Educational leadership program from 1969 -1999 and also served
as executive director of the Wyoming Association for School Administrators
(WASA) for many years during this time.
The purpose of the Basom School Leadership Institute is to invite teachers,
principals, superintendents, and other educators to have discussion about leadership
issues, leadership capacity building, and improving learning conditions in
Wyoming. This year's Institute will provide opportunities for participants
to discuss relevant leadership issues with a culminating report.
Maurice Wear served as professor of school law in the Educational Leadership
Unit at the University of Wyoming for over 30 years. He served the University
and the State by providing many courses and workshops related to school legal
issues to practicing teachers and administrators. He was noted as a national
expert in the field and presented at many national conferences. He is well
respected for his expertise and his genuine concern for the people he worked
with. His impact on schools and school leaders in Wyoming leaves a wonderful
legacy.
The Wear School law Institute was established in recognition of Dr. Wear's
school law influence in Wyoming and beyond. The purpose of the institute is
to bring teachers, principals, superintendents, school board members, attorneys,
association representatives, parents, and other stakeholders and partners together
to discuss preventive legal strategies to help schools and students. Local,
regional and national presenters provide updates on relevant issues and this
year's program also creates discussion opportunities for participants.
