Doing Math!

Elementary and middle/high school mathematics teachers have an opportunity to explore innovative teaching strategies and content at a July workshop sponsored by the University of Wyoming.

“Thinking and Doing Math Through Hands-On Applications in Engineering and Science” brings teachers to campus July 5-15. The UW Science and Mathematics Teaching Center (SMTC) and the Colleges of Education and Engineering sponsor the workshop, now in its second year. Applications are due March 1.

During the two-week workshop, participants will create mathematics and science modules inspired by everyday challenges in the fields of engineering and science. Once they leave Laramie, they will receive ongoing support from UW education and engineering faculty.

Modules include:

  • Applications of geometry in map reading, route finding and global positioning systems
  • Coding and cryptology
  • LOGO programming and robotics
  • 2D and 3D drafting with rapid prototyping.

Workshop participants receive a $1,000 stipend, two hours of graduate credit and on-campus lodging. Supporters include the Wyoming Department of Education; Title II, Part B; Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant; and the Hewlett Foundation “Best in the West” Grant.
