NATIONAL SPECIAL EDUCATION, REHABILITATIVE SERVICES MEETING AT UW

Feb. 11, 2005 -- Representatives from the national Special Education and Rehabilitative Services office will seek comments and recommendations for developing federal regulations based on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 during a meeting Friday, Feb. 18, at the University of Wyoming.

Troy Justesen, acting deputy assistant secretary for Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, and his staff will meet with interested people from 3-8:30 p.m. in the Wyoming Union ballroom.

UW is one of seven sites selected for the meeting this winter. Other locations are in Atlanta; Boston; Columbus, Ohio; Newark, N.J.; San Diego; and Washington, D.C.

"While individuals are allotted approximately five minutes to speak to the department members, up to 150 people are expected to be present at any given time," says Kay Cowie, interim head of the UW Department of Special Education. "A significant number of states in the central and western regions of the U.S. will send representatives to this meeting."

Cowie says state and local level education administrators, parent advocacy groups, special education attorneys, university personnel and other interested parties are expected to attend.

For more information concerning the requirements to speak to the committee, call Nance Shelsta, Wyoming Department of Education, at (307) 777-2562 or e-mail nshels@educ.state.wy.us.

Justesen serves as the principal adviser to the U.S. Secretary of Education on all departmental matters related to special education and rehabilitative services. His current leadership role coincides with several major legislative and regulatory initiatives of national scope that benefit children, youth and adults with disabilities.
