Program Educational Objectives

The following are the objec­tives that the Computer Science program is preparing its graduates to achieve:

• Success: Graduates will be employed in a computer science-related field or making progress toward an advanced graduate degree.
• Growing: Graduates show continued learning and leading in computing-related professions.
• Ethics: Graduates exhibit ethical and responsible behavior in all professional and community endeavors.

Student Outcomes

The program of study in Computer Sci­ence enables students to achieve, by the time of graduation:

1. Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
2. Design, implement and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
3. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
4. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
6. Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.

ABET Information

Accredited. UW’s computer science program is accredited by ABET, an organization that validates engineering, technology, and applied science programs worldwide for their quality.

 

 

Mission Statement 

Computer Science Department |  University of Wyoming 

Computer Science Departments have a multi-faceted and central role to play in a comprehensive public research university. The roles and obligations a Computer Science department must address include the following.

Undergraduate Education:​ To deliver rigorous undergraduate programs that prepare students for direct entry into the workforce or, to continue on with graduate studies. This is a key role for the department as part of its public service mission to the state. Also, the department has plans to offer a flexible framework of minors that can be tailored to the needs of other departments across campus.

Graduate Education:​ To deliver a strong graduate education program to prepare the next generation of computer science researchers for work in industry, government, and academia.

C​omputational Thinking:​ To design and facilitate the delivery of interdisciplinary computational thinking and introductory programming courses for all students across the University at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Core CS Research​ To continue research in core areas of computer science that have been the drivers for the successes of the field over the last sixty years. The success of computer science research has directly translated into the ubiquity of computing in modern society.

Interdisciplinary Programs:​ To serve as a collaborative partner to departments across the University in both research and teaching. Interdisciplinary work is a driver for innovation among all collaborators and provides the means for computer science, as a discipline, to amplify our own successes by enabling the success of others.

Industrial Partnerships:​ To continue to build a cohort of industrial partners and to serve them by providing access to facilities, faculty, and students. Academic-Industrial partnerships benefit both the department and industrial partners.

Advisory Role:​ To serve in an advisory capacity to leaders of the university, the state of Wyoming, and the nation regarding the impacts of innovative and disruptive technologies.

Diversity:​ To support diversity within the department itself. The underrepresentation of women and minorities is acute in our field. It is the responsibility of Computer Science departments to do whatever they can to support underrepresented groups.
