University of Wyoming Computer Science senior Dietrich Wambach participated in an 8 week Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the University of California Berkeley. The program was sponsored by the Team for Research in Ubiquitous Secure Technology (TRUST). Dietrich worked on a team advised by Mr. Chris Hoofnagle, a lecturer in residence at UC Berkeley Law.
The research project looked into the current state of online 3rd party tracking. There are companies who track users' web habits in order to provide more effective advertisements. Some companies have been found to try and continue tracking a user, even after he/she has implemented steps to prevent the tracking. The paper from the project can be found here. Results from the paper were written about on Wired's Epicenter.
