Step 1

Formal application to UW Admissions.  Apply Online.  The Graduate School application is valid for one year. The University of Wyoming requires a $50 application fee.

  • Note: The online application allows you to upload unofficial transcripts.  These can be used for application review and will save you time/money requesting official transcripts prior to the application deadline.  However, in the event that you are accepted to the program, the University of Wyoming will require all official transcripts be on file before you will be fully admitted.

Step 3

Official GRE scores must be sent to Admissions. Our school code is 4855. Note: if you have not already taken the exam, you should plan to take the test by December to complete the application process in a timely manner.

  • Note: The online application allows you to report unofficial test scores.  These can be used for application review and will save you time/money requesting official scores prior to the application deadline.  However, in the event that you are accepted to the program, we will need official scores on file before you will be fully admitted.  *Exception noted in FAQ.

Step 4

Submit the following materials to the online application.

  • Statement of Purpose of approximately 500 words explaining why you wish to undertake graduate study in creative writing. (Be sure to discuss the kind of creative work or project you intend to pursue within the program.)

  • Writing Sample representing your area of concentration. For prose, you may submit a maximum of 25 pages, numbered, typed, double-spaced. For poetry, you may submit a maximum of 10 pages, any format. If you work in more than one area of primary concentration or a hybrid genre, please see our FAQs and contact us if you have further questions.

  • Graduate Teaching Assistantship Application with accompanying 100-word statement.  The form does not need to be signed.  Your online submission is equivalent to an electronic signature for our purposes.  The W# is a University-assigned student ID and may be left blank.

  • NOTE: Please upload all supplemental materials to the online application.  The screen for doing so will be available after you pay the application fee.  You may email items to cw@uwyo.edu only if you encounter technical difficulties with the online system.

Step 5

Three letters of recommendation must be provided.  The online application allows you to submit three names and email addresses for recommendations.  The person will then receive an automatic request to upload a letter for you.  The automated system is compatible with Interfolio document delivery.

If your reference is uncomfortable with automated request systems, or does not receive the request due to spam filters, have him or her email the letter directly to cw@uwyo.edu or mail it to the MFA office.

TOEFL test scores must be provided (for applicants from non-English speaking countries).  A minimum score of 540 on the written exam, 207 on the computerized exam, or 76 on the Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)  is required for full admission.

TOEFL scores are valid for two years.

OR Official IELTS scores sent to the Admissions Office.  A minimum score of 6.0 is required for full admission.

NOTE: If your TOEFL score does not reflect the minimum requirements, you have not taken the test, or you simply need supplemental English study before attending the University of Wyoming, you have the opportunity to attend our ELS Language Center to improve your English language skills and waive the TOEFL requirement.

Class sizes are limited and the admission process is competitive. All your application materials must be received by our office by January 10th for consideration. We strongly recommend you not wait until January 10th to request recommendations online.  We cannot offer feedback on writing samples, and all deliberations of the admissions committee are confidential.
