What is an Recognized Student Organization (RSO)?

A student organization is an organization composed of and run by students. Aside from this, student organizations widely vary in their size, mission, and purpose. The purpose of recognizing student organizations at the University of Wyoming is to provide an opportunity for students to exercise their right to freely associate for a common purpose. Recognition is the process in which the student organizations become ‘official’ in the eyes of the university by allowing RSOs access to certain privileges and services at the university. Though you may be recognized, you are technically not part of the university.
Being involved with an RSO at the University of Wyoming is a great way to get involved on campus because it gives you the chance to:
  • Meet and make new friends;
  • Pursue special interests or hobbies;
  • Develop your leadership and communication skills;
  • Express support for and contribute to a cause or purpose you strongly believe in;
  • Gain opportunities for professional development;
  • Interact with faculty, staff, students and the community;
  • Participate in local, regional and national student and professional activities;
  • Develop a closer alliance with the University.
RSOs get many great free services and benefits like:
  • Free use of space in the Wyoming Union;
  • Free Branding Iron ads;
  • Use of the poster run and the digital signs in the Union;
  • Poster making supplies;
  • Ability to request funding from ASUW for programs, events, and conference registration fees;
  • Advertising on the campus calendar;
  • Free leadership and club development consultation.
There are a few ways for you to find an organization that fits you:
  • Check out how to join an org here.
  • If you can't find an organization for you, you can consider starting your own club or organization. There are a few stipulations that you must follow, but we try to make it as painless as possible.
  • If starting a new group or joining an existing one isn't your thing, we have a few other recommendations for you get involved at UW:
    • Join Fraternity & Sorority Life - Joining a fraternity or sorority is a great way to make connections, grow and develop your leadership, and give back to the community.
    • Join Your Student Government - Also known as ASUW; every fee-paying student is already a member so why not get involved with something you are already paying for? Have your voice heard!
    • Serve the Community - SLCE (Service, Leadership, and Community Engagement) organizes plenty of opportunities for you to serve the community while you're getting your education. They have everything from the annual Big Event to the Alternative Breaks program.
