Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Certification Program

Program Description

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Certification Program helps UW Personnel develop tools necessary for advancing equity and diversity in all aspects of their personal and professional lives. Our goal is to encourage engagement in diversity efforts around campus and within the Laramie community through a flexible process that participants tailor to meet their needs. Participants earn their DEI Certificate through reflective engagement in workshops, discussions, events, and committees.


Details

  • All UW personnel may register, including faculty, APLs, adjuncts, Alumni and staff as well as post-doctoral fellows and graduate students. In addition, community members and individuals from other institutions are welcome to apply.
  • A total of 100 points is required for certification. Points must come from at least 2 different areas.
  • Points must come from at least 2 different areas (see below).
  • Participants will have up to three years to complete the certification requirements.
  • Participants will submit their progress via an online form.

Program Outcomes

As a result of this certification, engaged participants will be able to:

  • Write a DEI statement for their area of interest, work or study.
  • Recognize the wide variety of resources and events that address DEI in your area.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of contemporary and emerging trends in DEI.
  • Recognize and learn the meaning of terminology relevant to DEI.
  • Identify the complex relationship between communication and multiple intersecting social identities.
  • Inform campus interactions and impact campus climate. 
  • Increase awareness of the intersecting issues that impact multiple understandings and approaches to diversity, equity and inclusion work.
  • Develop practical skills for moving towards a more equitable and inclusive campus.
  • Identify the many intersecting identities and roles participants have in diversity, equity and inclusion work.
  • Identify teaching practices that enhance DEI.

Create a lesson, unit, activity, or assignment in the area of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

  • Lesson must be freely shared with others & include learning objectives explicitly tied to DEI
  • Lesson must be evaluated and approved

Plan an event in the area of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (can be in conjunction with a committee)

  • Must be one of the primary planners for a large event, activity or initiative

Points

  • All points will be accumulated from your registration date forward.
  • You will be able to apply for points from any activity beginning with the fall of 2017.
  • You will be responsible for applying for points via an online form with a short reflective paragraph.
  • You will receive a Diversity Credit for each activity/event in which you participate.
  • These Diversity Awards will add up to your final Certification.
  • Some events will vary in points depending on the topics presented, engagement of the participant and consultation with the Program Facilitator.
